Chehal Qadmi - Celebrating World Heritage Day

About the walk

The old city of Srinagar has always been a centre of attraction. Its cultural vibrancy and the several historical monuments it hosts form an interesting amalgam. This makes the old city a place that any explorer must discover.

This walk starts at one of the many ghats that dot the banks of the Jhelum. One can marvel at the typical Kashmiri houses situated all around, and the serene backdrop of the historic shrine of Khanqah-i-Moula.  Winding through many culturally rich historical markets, it will cover monuments like the Budshah tomb, the shrine of Khanqah-i-Naqshbandiya, etc.

The walk shall be participatory in nature, and the students shall be expected to capture the images of the city in their sketches. It intends to foster a spirit of research and inquiry in the participating students and engage them in discussions on topics including understanding heritage, the importance of heritage in contemporary times, the need to know history, architectural and cultural evolution of the city, etc.

An on-site lecture by a senior conservation architect from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) at the shrine of Khanqah-i-Naqshbandiya, where conservation and restoration work is in progress, shall be a great learning experience for students and locals alike.

This guided tour is specially curated for School of Architecture, Bemina Degree College, Srinagar.
