Deep in the narrow alleys of today’s Chirag Delhi lie the treasures of medieval Delhi in the 14th and 15th centuries. The area was named Chirag Dilli as the saint Shaikh Nasiruddin Mahmud, who was given the title of Roshan-e-Chirag Dilli, was buried here. Shaikh Nasiruddin Mahmud succeeded Shaikh Nizamuddin Auliya as the head of the Chistiya sect. The tomb enclosure of Shaikh Nasiruddin houses many important structures such as the mosque of Farukhsiyar and the tomb of Shaikh Zainuddin, among others.
Next to the Dargah complex of Saint Nasiruddin lies the tomb of the founder of the Lodhi dynasty, Bahlol Lodhi. This tomb is iconic in its architectural style and differs on a large scale in comparison with the tombs of the other Lodhi rulers situated in the Lodhi Gardens. The alleys of Chirag Delhi also hide several gateways, enclosure walls and other structures, that still stands today, in a derelict state.
