About the Talk

There are many types of Bihu in Assam, performed by different tribes such as the Mishings, Deoris, Morans, Sonowal Kacharis, etc. Each tribe has evolved its own unique performative style. This talk will explore the various types of Bihu performed across the plains of Assam by its local communities. It will focus primarily on the evolution of Bihu over time—its past, present and future as a festival and a dance form. The talk, led by Dr Anil Saikia, will be supported by a live performance, and old folk instruments associated with the Bihu dance will be displayed. The baithak will also broadly discuss the future of Bihu and how the dance has, over the years, made its way from open fields to the stage.
