Heritage of Textiles and Artefacts at the Crafts Museum

About the walk

Come and Join us on Sahapedia’s 850th Walk!

The National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum, popularly known as Crafts Museum, was established in 1956 by the freedom fighter Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay. The museum is situated in Pragati Maidan, opposite the Purana Qila, inside a beautiful complex that was designed by the renowned architect Charles Correa. This museum is known for housing traditional handicrafts and handlooms, collected from the different states of India. The quaint galleries of the museum are full of hidden gems that give us a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of the country.

Each of the different galleries of the museum is unique in its own way. In this heritage walk, we will visit three galleries of the museum. The first one will be the Folk and Tribal Art gallery, where we will look at different sculptures, paintings and artefacts. This will be followed by the Textile Gallery. Outside the textile gallery, the attendees can stop to have a quick chat with the craftsmen and shop for a thing or two, if they like.

We shall then walk through the village compound to learn about the rural and communal lifestyle of different states. The walk will also focus on the local demands of their products, with hands-on experiences and live interactions with the craftsmen present in the museum. You can conclude the walk with a snack or sumptuous meal at the cafe, which is popular for its unique menu which fuses local and international cuisine!

This guided tour is free.
