The Hidden Gems of Jabalpur

About the walk

Jabalpur was a centre of the Kalachuri dynasty (10th-14th centuries), and the Tripuri and Rajgond dynasties (14th-16th centuries, when the capital shifted towards Garha). The city developed a syncretic culture influenced by the intermittent Mughal and Maratha rule (1728 AD in the present Hanumantal area). Remains of the ancient city of Tripuri lie within Jabalpur in the form of several architectural and sculptural marvels.

In this walk, we will try to see some of the hidden gems of Jabalpur. We will start our walk from the Kamania Gate, erected in the memory of the Congress Assembly of 1939. Then we will head towards the rich built heritage at and around Kotwali, moving alongside the series of shophouses in the market area that belong to different periods, from the Maratha to the British era. Our next stop is Baldau Mandir, which is devoted to the elder brother of Sri Krishna, and built in the year 1822. We will then walk through the Havelis of the reign of Raja Gokuldas (where his family still lives behind the beautiful Rajput style Jharokhas) and reach the Hanumantal area which is surrounded by several temples from different eras. We will end our walk at the Jain Mandir, which is one of the largest independent Jain temples in India.

The guided tour is free.
