Block Printing of Sanganer

About the walk

This event is ticketed.

India is renowned for its printed and dyed cotton cloth since the twelfth century AD. While the earliest records mention printing centers in South India, the craft seems to have been prevalent all over India. The craft appears to have spread gradually with the migration of craft workers to other areas; centres such as Sanganer in Rajasthan rose to prominence in the seventeenth and eighteenth century.

Sanganer is a small town situated in the southern part of Jaipur. It is famous for its traditional hand block printed fabrics. Sanganer was historically recognised for producing more upscale products for a royal clientele or  for use in temples. Sanganer textiles are said to be more authentic and natural, less influenced by the popular market and industrial mechanisation than the town’s more commercial neighbours.

During the walk, we will discuss the history of this craft, will be introduced to  the tools, processes and traditions of the craft as well as the amazing stories of the community.
