The Courtesan Culture and Culinary Heritage of Chawri Bazaar

About the walk

Let us take a step back into a bygone era when the imperial city of Shahjahanabad was in its prime. Chawri Bazaar, as it is now called, was a boulevard of beautiful houses where the cultured courtesans or tawaifs lived. Rich and powerful men from across the country came to his bazaar in pursuit of the company of these women. The history of the heydays of this market, famous historical landmarks and its well-known courtesans will be discussed during the walk.

Additionally, this market also happens to house some of the centuries-old eating joints. While some of these shops are known, there are also hidden gems that we will discover. The walk will start from Chawri Bazaar metro station and cover Chawri Bazaar till Barshabulla Chowk, some part of Hauz Qazi Road, Masjid Mubarak Begum, Madhubala's home, Masjid Rukn ud daula, Sita Ram Bazaar, Kucha Pati Ram, before ending at the metro station.

This guided tour is free.
