Daughters of Sangam: Feminist History of Prayagraj

About the walk

Generally, mainstream history has overlooked women's contribution and their role in society. Against this backdrop where women and their efforts have been trivialized and marginalized, Prayagraj has witnessed some legendary women who didn't only vocalize their feminist politics but lived it too. From Sarala Devi who established the first women's organization in India to Cornelia Shorabji who became the first women advocate in Indian history, Prayagraj has a rich heritage of feminist realities and their intimate narratives.

Join us on this virtual tour where we will be diving deep into the feminist history of the city. Not only by naming women who did great things but to learn how they exercised agency and power under specific historical circumstances. The walk will cover the mausoleum of Man Bai in Khusro Bagh and story of the empty cenotaph, Bharat Stri Mahamandal foundation story of the first women organization of India and contribution of Sarla Devi, Survival story of musician Janakibai and how she was named Chappanchhuri, Allahabad high court and story of first women advocate Cornelia Shorabji and finally, we will arrive at Bharati Bhawan library and talk about Hindi poet Mahadevi Verma and Subhadra Kumari Chauhan and how they started the feminist movement in Hindi literature.

This is an online guided tour. This event is free and open to all.
