Stories of the Freedom Struggle at the Architecture Museum

About the walk

The story of Chandigarh is inextricably intertwined with India’s independence and its simultaneous partition in 1947. During this time, the state of Punjab was divided into two parts—western Punjab became a part of Pakistan and eastern Punjab remained in India. Therefore, the state required a new capital. To promote the free spirit of the newly liberated country, Jawaharlal Nehru appointed Le Corbusier, renowned for his modern brutalist architectural style, to create the blueprint for the new city of Chandigarh. The state of Haryana came into existence after Punjab was partitioned a second time, and Chandigarh became the common capital for both the states. Today, Chandigarh enjoys the status of a union territory.

The Chandigarh Architecture Museum is situated in the museum complex of Sector 10 and displays the architectural history of the conception and construction of the city. Let's explore the various blueprints, models, paintings and other artefacts related to the planning of Chandigarh.

This guided tour is free.
