About the walk

St. Paul's Cathedral is a marvel of 19th century Gothic Revival architecture in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is the seat of the Diocese of Calcutta. The cornerstone for the cathedral was laid in 1839, and it was completed in 1847. It was the first cathedral built in the overseas territory of the British Empire and is often compared to the Norwich Cathedral of England.

 

The construction was patronised by Bishop Wilson. The cathedral's interior has a display of many plastic art forms and memorabilia. The cathedral grounds have been used for burials too. Surrounding the cathedral there is a well looked-after garden, with a variety of trees of different species.
