Celebrating International Museum Day - Redefining the State Central Library

About the walk

The English word 'museum' has its origins in Latin, in which it means a place or temple for knowledge. A library is a museum of knowledge that connects people with ideas in a variety of ways: sometimes with books, sometimes with information, sometimes through the web or special programmes, or even through beautiful buildings. Libraries create a unique culture of exchange of knowledge, and this walk attempts to understand the relationship between libraries and society.

Bangalore’s Sir Seshadri Iyer Memorial Library, or the State Central Library, is one of the city’s most iconic heritage structures--owing to its striking red brick facade and its two-tiered curved central hall. Located within the lush green Cubbon Park, it is Karnataka’s largest library, housing over 3,140,000 books with a copy of every book ever published in the state.

We will also explore some exclusive collections that further inform us about the history and culture of the city. The walk intends to start a conversation about the importance of such public spaces in the future and the protection of written heritage.

This guided tour is free.
