A Nature Trail through the Lanes of Lutyens’ Delhi

About the walk

Where will the people go?

This was the question that riddled urban planners in Britain throughout the twentieth century. Would they go to the cities, with their infinite amusements and high wages, or would they settle in the villages, with their infinite open spaces and their promise of a peaceful life?

This question spread all over the world and was the basis of one of the greatest building projects in the British Empire: New Delhi. While the new city was being built, special focus was put on what trees would be planted within the city.

This walk explores the horticultural history of the eighth city of Delhi as well as the relationship between humankind and the environment at large. The walk will begin at the Udyog Bhavan metro station, then proceed to Rajpath and Janpath and, finally, end at the Lok Kalyan Marg metro station after going through Akbar Road and Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Marg.

This guided tour is free.

Srajit M Kumar is a history student from Lucknow. Currently studying at Jamia Millia Islamia, he is an aspiring historian and an avid cinephile – the kind who likes to go to the cinemas every Friday to check out the newest releases. He also happens to have a certain tendency, which he calls 'going out to play’: on random days, he takes a bus to an unknown location in Delhi and explores its environs, through which he has discovered a large part of the city.
