Paintings and Woodwork - Exploring the Arts of the Maratha Period

About the walk

From the seventeenth century onwards, Pune grew into an important town under the political supremacy of the Maratha kingdom. This gave rise to exquisite architecture in the form of wadas or palatial houses. Peshwas commissioned wall paintings based on various themes in their wadas. A few traces of these Maratha paintings have stood the test of time. The architecture of the wada has fine woodwork as an essential component of its structure. Both of these art practices, though part and parcel of wadas in Maharashtra, are under-appreciated in the modern era.

This walk seeks to explore these lesser-known art practices while understanding their style, form, pattern and other nuances. We shall also learn more about Maratha paintings and Deccan woodwork in general. We shall visit the few wada specimens that still exist, as seen in Shaniwar Wada, Nana Wada and Vishrambaug Wada.

This guided tour is free.
