About the Talk

.

Prabhat Film Company was one of the leading film-production companies of India. Many of the films produced by the studio are now classics, and are considered a distinguished part of India's cinema heritage.

Initially, the company produced six silent films. With the advent of talkies, Prabhat Studios produced five such films at Kolhapur. In 1933, the company moved to Pune and established its own well-equipped studio in the city, the biggest in Asia at the time. In all, Prabhat Studios produced about 45 films in Marathi and Hindi. Now, the Film and Television Institute of India is housed on the Prabhat Studios campus.

During the past 50 years, the Indian film industry has made tremendous advances. However, Prabhat’s films stand their ground when compared to of the Indian films produced in later years, faithfully reflecting Indian life and culture. When some of their movies were screened recently for a new generation of cinegoers, they were all received with unprecedented enthusiasm. This shows how well the films have retained their thematic technical interest, even though more than a half a century has gone by.

This baithak is in collaboration with Heritage India Communications, an organisation that, for the last 12 years, has worked extensively towards creating awareness about India’s rich heritage through publications, heritage walks, trips, lecture series and workshops.
