About the Talk

Libraries change with technologies of production, dissemination and consumption of texts. The great libraries of the world, from India's Nalanda and Ashurbanipal's library in Nineveh to Egypt's Alexandria and Hadrian's Library in Athens, have either perished because of disasters and plunder, or because of their inability to adjust to changing technologies of textual production and reading. A few, such as al-Qarawiyyin Library in Morocco, founded in AD 859, continue to this day.  Many argue that traditional libraries, such as the public libraries in India, are fast becoming obsolete in the digital era. The talk examines how far this view is true and explores problems facing Indian public libraries today.
