Celebrating World Heritage Day - Revisiting the Nawabi Times at Imambara

About the walk

Lucknow, a city known for Nawabs and kebabs, is also notable for its rich cultural heritage. One example of this is Bara Imambara. A major landmark and a symbol of the pride and grandeur of Lucknow, the beautiful structure contains in itself mysteries and histories worth exploring. The building was commissioned in 1784 AD by Asaf-ud-Daula, the fourth Nawab of Awadh, to help the poor make a living in a drought-ridden year.

Bara Imambara is a place of congregational prayer and the Muharram Majalis. Architecturally, it is notable for its arched ceiling with no support beams or pillars. It is also known for its fascinating bhoolbhulaiya (maze) containing 489 identical doorways. Along with this, the complex also contains the huge Asfi Mosque and a baoli (stepwell).

This guided tour is free.
