A Sneak Peek into the Immortal Amaravati Sculptures

About the walk

Amaravati, meaning 'abode of immortals', was a thriving Buddhist centre in South India, dating back to the 2nd century BC. It was home to one of the earliest Buddhist stupas with panelled friezes from the Jataka Tales. The Government Museum of Madras holds rich collections from the Amaravati period. It is home to some of the invaluable lime stone sculptures of lotus medallions, drum and dome slabs. This walk will take us through a brief history of Amaravati, its sculptural importance and Buddhist culture.

  • Address: Beside Government Maternity Hospital, Pantheon Road, Egmore.
  • Entry fees of Rs 15 for Indian nationals and Rs 250 for foreign nationals are to be borne by the participant.
  • Separate tickets are to be bought by the participant for photography inside the museum.
  • Please wear comfortable shoes and carry drinking water.
  • Due to restrictions in the museum, only registered people should participate as it will be difficult to manage a bigger group.
  • Parking facilities are available inside the museum campus.
