Whether during the festive season or on a normal day, you can always spot a huge crowd of enthusiastic people shopping here. This walk will explore the first municipal market in India, known to sell everything under the sun. It will also trace the history of the structures and institutions that have evolved around the market to cater to the needs of the thousands of people who visit every day. Come and witness how a market built exclusively for the British became a meeting point of diverse cultures.

Sahil Ray holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Jadavpur University, and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in history from the same. He considers himself a book-worm and an animal-lover. His areas of interest are food and culinary history, the history of the man-animal relationship, and the sociocultural history of colonial Calcutta.
