Unwinding the Past - The Story of Chandigarh, India's Modern City

About the walk

The Chandigarh Architecture Museum, also known as the City Museum, has always been a point of fascination in Chandigarh. The building that houses the museum was designed by architect S.D. Sharma, who trained directly under Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, also known as Le Corbusier. The basic design of the museum is based on a building created by Le Corbusier as an exhibition pavilion in Zurich, Switzerland. After Corbusier’s death, Sharma was entrusted with the task of designing the building for the City Museum and overseeing its creation.

The building of the architecture museum had to be conceptualised and designed in a way that was congruous with the adjacent art museum. It is a fabulous example of modernism done the right way. The museum displays original letters and correspondence between the administrators and the architects who created the blueprint for the city of Chandigarh. Original drawings and plans for the city are displayed here along with photographs of the city at various stages of development.

Walk with us to explore the story of Chandigarh, one of the first modern cities in independent India.

The guided tour is free.
