You may have heard a lot of stories about Humayun's Tomb. However, the origin of this monument can be found in the nearby Nizamuddin Basti. The Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin settled in a village named Gayaspur and lived here for almost 60 years. He was a great saint of his day who practiced his religion while serving the common people.
His works became famous among people like Amir Khusro, Shah Jahan's daughter Jahanara and Muhammad Shah Rangeela. Nizamuddin Dargah, a shrine built over the grave of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, consists of a square chamber surrounded by verandahs that are pierced by arched openings. The area around the tomb is considered sacred, with the result that a large number of people, including royalty, lie buried here.
In this walk through history, we will visit the grand sixteenth-century mausoleum of Mirza Aziz Koklatash, after which we will visit the Urs Mahal, the tomb of Mirza Ghalib. We will then see the dargah (resting place) of Nizamuddin, and the baoli near it. We will listen to some unheard stories as we take a stroll around Nizamuddin Basti.
