Walk with the Locals at Cheenapara

About the walk

This event is ticketed.

The Lower Chitpur Road ends at Tiretti Bazaar which is located in the neighbourhood that was home to the first Chinatown or Cheenapara in central Kolkata, and is around 250 years old. Tiretti Bazaar is a public space, tucked away between two large public buildings; its morning breakfast market, known for its Chinese snacks, is a popular destination, especially among the food and heritage enthusiasts of the city and the tourists who come looking for it.

Cheenapara is unique as it differs significantly from the typical idea of Chinatowns elsewhere. Enmeshed within the urban fabric of Kolkata, this is not a separate touristic entity but upholds a way of living alongside other diverse communities. If you happen to take a walk around Tiretti Bazaar, you will find the neighbourhood dotted with Chinese clubs, temples, food joints, provision/sauce shops and a few beauty parlours owned by the Chinese.

What’s the best way to know a neighbourhood, its people and its unique culture than to explore its different aspects with the locals? The Community Art Project (TCAP) invites you for a walk with the locals, the Indian Chinese, who grew up in Cheenapara and have seen and experienced the neighbourhood change over the years.

The Indian Chinese from the TCAP team will take you for a walk in their own neighbourhood where you will hear their stories, meet the community, stop over at Chinese temples, clubs, the marketplace, lanes and by-lanes, and of course, enjoy the famous Chinese breakfast!
