Exploring Gwalior's Unique Pottery

About the walk

There are many cities in India famous for their arts and crafts. However, there aren’t many places where a traditional art has been kept alive through the passion of an individual. At a time when bone china, melamine, etc., have taken over our modern kitchens, Gwalior’s local pottery tradition has survived through the establishment of a small workstation.

Gwalior, once the princely state of the Scindias, is the birthplace of the Gwalior Potteries workshop. Tinted with hues of white and Persian blue (among other colours), this coloured pottery is truly unique.

In this walk, we will explore the workshop and look the varieties of pottery produced there. This is a chance to revisit the Scindia era and examine a regional craft that has fascinated people since its creation.

This guided tour is free.
