K.R. Market - The Journey from a Battlefield to a Bustling Bazaar

About the walk

The historical Krishnarajendra Market, also known as K.R. Market or City Market, is one of Asia's largest flower and vegetable bazaars. The market was named after the 24th maharaja of Mysore, Nalwadi Krishnarajendra Wodeyar IV. Opened in 1921, the market was built on the model of the S.S. Hogg Market in Kolkata. The bazaar served as a buffer zone between the Bangalore Fort (built by Kempegowda I, the founder of Bengaluru) and the native town of Bengaluru Pete during the third Anglo–Mysore War in 1791. From a battlefield to a bustling bazaar, this place has seen it all. The produce that is sold here is a sensory delight, and one can take home vegetables and flowers at unbelievable prices! While retaining its original structure, this wholesale market will soon be revamped under the Smart City project. Join us on a morning walk to discover the unique history of K.R. Market.

This guided tour is free.
