About the Talk

This Baithak shall explore the illustration of the cosmos and the metaphysical in the context of Indian manuscripts, with particular focus on the Anadi Patan. It shall introduce the audience to the illustrated manuscripts of Assam, and examine the metaphors, socio-religious syncretism, foreign influence, and regional flavour that these manuscripts have. By decoding the iconological metaphors in Neo-Vaishnavite manuscripts, the talk shall attempt to highlight the various folk traditions of medieval Assam, and also shed light on medieval 'Assamese-ness' in the face of Buddhist, Jaina Sultanate and Mughal art. An investigation of the medieval artist community--the khanikars--shall attempt to elucidate the development of unique pictorial narratives in Assam's illustrated manuscripts.

This Baithak is supported by the Department of History, Cotton University.
