About the Talk

The Jantar Mantar Observatory in New Delhi was built by built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the early eighteenth century. Jai Singh II is also credited with the building of such observatories is four other locations—Jaipur, Varanasi, Ujjain and Mathura. During this walk, we undertake some actual astronomical observations with these historical instruments for a better appreciation of their usage and accuracies, and know more about this architectural marvel and the history of astronomy in India.
