About the Talk

Providing relief from the intense heat of summer, the monsoons are celebrated throughout the Indian subcontinent. This joy finds its resonance in Hindustani classical music as well. The rainy season evokes the nostalgia of a range of seasonal melodies performed and celebrated specifically at this time of year.  From the sound and fury of Raag Malhar to the swagger of Kajri, Sawan or Jhoola, such examples constitute the intangible cultural heritage of this nation and traverse gharanas. The Archive of North Indian Classical Music at the School of Cultural Texts and Records, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, is curating a listening session in celebration of the monsoons, where the archive will present representative audio artefacts from its collection.

This curated experience will provide a unique experience of engaging wit

h the digitised audio tracks, and will be supplemented with corresponding information on individual entries.

The session will be facilitated by Shantanu Majee and Biswadeep Chakraborty, a research fellow with the Archive of North Indian Classical Music. This baithak is held in association with The Makers Collaborative, who will be coordinating the event.
