Revisiting the Historic New Market

About the walk

In the era of globalisation, when fancy shopping malls are springing up in every corner of the country and attracting shoppers with their grandeur and extravagance, the SS Hogg Market at the heart of the city stands tall and proud since the colonial era. Whether it is the festive season or a normal day, you can always spot a huge crowd of enthusiastic people. The walk will explore the first municipal market in India where one can allegedly buy anything under the sun.

It will also trace the history of the structures and institutions that have evolved around the market to cater to the needs of thousands of people who visit it every day—for instance, the movie theatres and street food. Come and witness how a market built exclusively for the English became a meeting point of diverse cultures.

The guided tour is free.
