Travelling Back in Time – Banaras and its Astronomical Observatories

About the walk

Varanasi has a rich historical legacy that gives us the opportunity to connect with the beauty and culture of the region. In the 18th century, when it was difficult to measure time, altitude, the position of the sun, etc., astronomical observatories were constructed for this purpose. In this walk, we shall learn about these astronomical instruments (yantras) and their functions at Jantar Mantar, followed by a visit to an intriguing museum at Man Singh Palace. The city is blessed with many temples, and we shall be exploring the temple complex and old shops. The walk will start from Gautameshvara Mahadev Temple at Godaulia and will conclude at the Ghat.

This city has a lot to offer. Join us as we explore the intricacies of this fascinating city.
