A Walk through Dariba Kalan - Jewellery Hub of Delhi

About the walk

Dariba Kalan is a 350-year-old Mughal era bazaar, which is considered a hub of jewels and ornaments. It is known for silver, gold and diamond jewellery.  Its name is derived from the Persian 'Dur-e be-baha', which translates to 'unparalleled pearl', while Kalan means big. Almost every shop here is around 200 years old. It is said that princesses during the reign of Shah Jahan often purchased gold and gems from Dariba Kalan.

After exploring the jewellery market, we will move to the adjacent lane of Kinari Bazar, which was earlier known as Dariba Khurd or Chhota Dariba. It is known for embroidery items like lace, thread work, embellishment, borders, stonework, gold/silver work and garlands. We will also visit the shop of Gulab Singh Johri Mal, who is well-known for the manufacturing and export of ittar (natural perfume). As Daribakalan has several famous street food stalls, we will end our walk by satisfying our taste buds with some delicious food.

This walk will also touch upon the history of the bloody massacre in Dariba Kalan in March 1739, ordered by the Persian invader Nadir Shah.

This guided tour is free.
