Haryana has a rich cultural history—it is the land where the famous battle of Mahabharata was fought and where the Bhagavat Gita was narrated by Lord Krishna to Arjuna. Its name itself translates to 'Abode of God’. The history of the state dates back to prehistoric times.
One of Haryana's major attractions is Kurukshetra, ‘the land of the Mahabharata war’. This area is a unique and remarkable example of Indian civilisation and its phases of transition, from ancient to medieval to modern. The Mahabharata era was followed by the reign of famous kings such as Harshvardhan, the Sultanate period, the Mughal era and, finally, the British colonial rule.
Through the walk we will uncover these phases of Indian history, starting with Harsh ka Tila, an archaeological site with an ancient mound that stands 15–18 m tall. It is said to have belonged to the Kushanas and is surrounded by Mughal gardens in a charbagh pattern. 100 m away from Harsh ka Tila is a baoli made of lakhauri bricks. Baolis were a major source of water collection and management during those days.
The most prominent structure in the complex is Sheikh Chilli’s tomb, also known as the 'Taj of the North'. This marvelous structure is an impression of the religious and spiritual teaching of the famous saint. As we move around the complex we will see various other historical structures that reflect India's glorious past.
