Celebrating World Heritage Day - Pause and Sketch in the Walled City of Ahmedabad

About the walk

Perched discreetly on the busy Kalupur Swaminarayan Mandir Road, is an ancient derasar (Jain temple) dedicated to Shri Muleva Parshwanath. Although in close proximity to the phenomenally noisy Relief Road, it is amazingly tranquil; a chabutra adding to its serenity.

If one walks into the many narrow khanchas on either side of this road, there are several more derasars and pols (traditional housing clusters) to discover, and, of course, there is the famous Swaminarayan Mandir.

But we walk towards its farthest end, that is Harishbhai’s Chai stall, across which lies Jaadaa Bhagat ni pol. This pol boasts of a cluster of homes with exquisite wooden facades. Stroll further inside it, and the galis get narrower, while the laid-back life of the pol unfolds around you.

This time though, we don’t just pass by, we don’t just wonder; we pause and sketch, while exploring the Walled City of Ahmedabad.

This guided tour is free.
