A Walk Through the Elephanta Caves

About the walk

Located close to the concrete jungle of Mumbai, the Elephanta Caves lie just off the coast of the Arabian Sea. This “city of caves” is known to have existed from at least the 2nd century BC on the Island of Elephanta or Gharapuri. Separated by a narrow valley, this island is home to five Hindu and two Buddhist caves.

The huge Trimurti Shiva, along with the other sculptures, constitutes the epitome of Hindu cave art. One of the greatest examples of Indian rock art, Elephanta proudly emerged as a trade center in the 5th-7th centuries BC and stands today as a mute testimonial of the past.

Come, join us as we explore the mysteries of the forgotten world!

This guided tour is free.
